Learning Tips
My child is not motivated to read Chinese books. How can I help them?
Many children are averse to reading due to a lack of confidence and aptitude. Hence, we believe in and are committed to cultivating a love of the Chinese language and culture from a young age. To motivate your child to read Chinese books, consider the following steps:
• Make use of Berries curriculum: To develop a love for reading, our curriculum includes a different Chinese storybook that students will read with the teacher every year, delving deeper into the narrative by chapter, inculcating essential positive values and learning new vocabulary and sentences. To motivate your child, you can encourage your child to share their thoughts about the book, such as their favourite character and chapter, helping them consolidate and review what they learnt.
• Align with their interest: To cultivate interest in the language, you can consider introducing and exposing your child to Chinese books of topics that are of interest to them. There are many audio book resources available online that will be useful for your child, incorporating their sense of sight and sound to understand the narrative, before progressing on to comics, picture books and then traditional or e-books.
• Visit bookstores: If you require recommendations on books, you are welcome to visit our bookstore "Hook On Books" at 114 Neil Road where there is a wide variety of Chinese books tailored for children. You may visit their Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/hookonbooks/ or Instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/hook_on_books/ to contact them for recommendations on Chinese reading materials.
• Make use of resources: There are also other resources that you can tap on, such as Chinese reading resources provided by the National Library Board: https://www.nlb.gov.sg/main/site/discovereads/MTL/Chinese
Alternatively, if your child is interested in comics, these comics published on Zaobao schools page will be useful for them: https://www.zbschools.sg/showbiz/manga
